Diseases, Pests, and Disorders of Apple Trees in Home Gardens

Growing apples in the home garden can be rewarding, but success requires attention to a range of common problems. Apple trees are highly susceptible to insects, diseases, and environmental stresses that can reduce fruit quality and tree health.  Even small plantings require regular care, including monitoring, pruning, and timely management practices to produce usable fruit.

Home gardeners should expect challenges each season. Insects, diseases, weather conditions, and physiological disorders can all affect flowering, fruit set, and fruit quality.  While some issues can be minimized by selecting resistant cultivars and using good cultural practices, others require active management throughout the growing season.  Understanding these common problems helps gardeners make informed decisions and maintain healthy, productive apple trees.

Alternate or Biennial Bearing

Alternate or biennial bearing is common in apple trees and results in a heavy crop one year, followed by a light crop the next. A large crop reduces energy available for flower bud formation, which limits the following year’s yield. Thinning fruit during heavy set years helps maintain more consistent production and improves fruit size and quality. Disease and Insect Issues

Apple production in Iowa requires attention to pest management. Trees typically require multiple sprays each season to maintain fruit quality.

Common diseases include apple scab, cedar-apple rust, powdery mildew, black rot, canker, sooty blotch, flyspeck, and fire blight. When these diseases are not managed, fruit production is greatly impacted. Selecting disease-resistant cultivars is one of the best tactics home gardeners can use to reduce the need for fungicides.

Major insect pests include codling moth, apple maggot, apple sawfly, plum curculio, and aphids that damage fruit or leaves. Apples have little natural resistance to insect pests, so monitoring and timely control are necessary to produce high-quality fruit.

Good sanitation, proper pruning, and maintaining tree vigor help reduce pest pressure. Regular sprays utilizing a home orchard spray is the most reliable way to avoid pest and disease problems.

Physiological Disorders

Physiological disorders are abnormalities of the fruit that are not associated with diseases or insect pests. They can appear during the growing season or after harvest when the fruit are being stored, and affect the appearance and usability of the fruit. 

Many of these issues can be controlled through a variety of tactics. 

  • Planting apple trees on well-drained sites and irrigating during periods of drought. 
  • Controlling nitrogen fertilization to avoid excessive vegetative growth and over-sized fruit. 
  • Moderate pruning to maintain a proper balance between vegetative growth and fruiting. 
  • Promoting normal crop yields from year-to-year by supporting good pollination and thinning fruit to avoid biennial bearing. 
  • Harvesting at the proper time since apples harvested too early are more prone to storage scald, while those harvested late are more prone to bitter pit, Jonathan spot, water core, and internal breakdown. 
  • Commercial growers may also apply foliar calcium sprays in years when unfavorable soil moisture conditions develop in the spring, or whenever the trees have had a history of one or more of the disorders. However, this tactic is not practical for most home gardeners.

Bitter Pit

Bitter pit is a disorder linked to a calcium imbalance in the fruit. Symptoms include small, sunken skin spots with brown, corky tissue beneath. It often develops late in the season or during storage and is more common on large fruit and vigorous trees. Maintain even soil moisture, avoid excessive nitrogen, and manage crop load to reduce risk.

Water Core

Water core occurs before harvest, and is characterized by translucent, water-soaked areas in the flesh. These water-soaked areas commonly develop near the core, but in severe cases, can radiate out to the skin. Fruit with water core are edible, and may have a sweeter flavor, but their storage life is reduced. Mild cases of water core can disappear in storage.

Cork Spot

Cork spot occurs during the growing season, and is characterized by localized green to brown sunken spots on the fruit or in the flesh. The spots in the flesh, which may or may not develop just under the skin, are brown, corky, dead tissue, and are more prominent toward the calyx half of the apple. The spots in the flesh have a bitter taste. Under severe conditions, fruit cracking can occur.

Jonathan Spot

Jonathan spot occurs late in the growing season or in storage. It is characterized as small, brown to black spots on the skin that may or may not be sunken. The spots develop most frequently on the sun-exposed side of the fruit, and are often associated with the lenticels (dots on the skin's surface). The flesh under the spot has a water-soaked appearance, but does not develop an off-flavor.

Internal Breakdown

Internal breakdown is a storage disorder that is characterized by a browning of the flesh and eventual softening and disintegration of the fruit. All fruit will eventually develop internal breakdown. The cultivar and storage conditions determine the onset of normal internal breakdown. However, its premature development can be a serious problem.

Storage Scald

Storage scald is a disorder that results in brown discoloration of the skin during storage. It is usually only a problem when fruit are stored for a long period of time. Fruit that develop storage scald are edible, but not very attractive.

Weather-Related Disorders

Russetting

Russeting appears as rough, brown, corky patches on the apple skin. This condition often results from environmental factors early in fruit development, such as moisture, humidity, or minor surface injury. While russeting affects appearance, it usually does not reduce eating quality. 

Cracked Skin

Fruit cracking develops when rapid water uptake follows dry conditions, causing the skin to split. Consistent irrigation and avoiding extreme fluctuations in soil moisture help limit cracking.

Sunscald

Sunscald damages fruit or bark when exposed to intense sunlight and temperature extremes. Injury includes discolored or cracked tissue on exposed surfaces, especially on young trees or fruit on the sun-facing side. Protect trees by maintaining good canopy cover.
