Question:
How do I care for a grapefruit tree?Answer:
Grapefruit and several other types of citrus can be grown indoors in Iowa. Indoors, place citrus plants in a sunny south or west window. Water plants regularly when growing in spring and summer, less often in winter. In spring and summer, fertilize plants with a dilute fertilizer solution every 2 to 4 weeks. Do not fertilize during winter. If possible, place citrus plants outdoors in spring (mid- to late May in Iowa). Plants will need to be acclimated to outdoor conditions. Initially, place plants in a shady location. After 2 or 3 days, move the plants to an area that receives 1 to 2 hours of sun. Gradually increase the amount of sun the plants receive over a period of several days. After 7 to 10 days, the plants should be properly acclimated and should remain in a sunny location. Plants should be brought back indoors in early to mid-September.
