Epsom salt, also known as magnesium sulfate (MgSO4), is touted as one of the best nutrients for gardens and plants. These purported benefits include increasing seed germination, improving uptake of other nutrients, enhancing growth, producing more flowers, deterring pests like slugs and voles, and reducing the total amount of fertilizer needed. There is no scientific evidence to support any of these claims and some of these claims are in direct opposition to what research has shown.
The truth is that Epsom salt should only be used with intensive crop production, and only when the soil or plant has a known magnesium deficiency. A soil test is needed to determine a magnesium deficiency.
