Dust has accumulated on the foliage of my houseplants. How can I clean the plants?

Question:

Dust has accumulated on the foliage of my houseplants. How can I clean the plants?

Answer:

Cleaning houseplants improves their appearance, stimulates growth, and may help control insects and mites.

Large-leaved plants may be cleaned with a damp soft sponge or cloth. Simply wipe away dust and rinse the sponge when it becomes dirty. A mild dishwashing soap solution (add a few drops of dishwashing soap to lukewarm water) can be used to further clean leaves, but it runs the risk of damaging them.  Household soaps (usually more accurately classified as detergents) can damage the waxy cuticle on the leaf, causing discoloration and browning. In nearly all cases, a cloth with clear water effectively cleans dust and has no potential to damage leaves.

Plants can also be cleaned by placing them in the sink or shower and gently spraying them with lukewarm water.  Be sure to adjust the pressure and water temperature before spraying the plants.

African violets and other fuzzy-leaved plants can be cleaned with a damp, soft cloth or soft-bristled brush.
