ISU Extension and Outreach and the Iowa Master Gardener Program continue our dedication to providing high-quality horticulture information for both aspiring Master Gardeners and home gardening enthusiasts.

We're excited to announce the renaming of our core offering from Iowa Master Gardener Training to Garden Academy and to clarify the options available for participation.

Choose Your Path:

Option 1: Master Gardener Volunteer Track

  1. Apply to be a Master Gardener Volunteer.
  2. Complete a background check and county interview (if applicable).
  3. Pay the ISU Garden Academy fee to your county office ($150).
  4. Complete the 10-week training.
  5. Complete a 40-hour volunteer internship within the first year.

Option 2: Iowa Home Gardener Track

  1. Purchase the ISU Garden Academy course through the Extension Store ($300).
  2. Complete the 10-week training. *Receive a certificate of completion as an Iowa Home Gardener (does not confer the title of Master Gardener).

What to Expect from ISU Garden Academy:

  • 10 weeks of online instruction, including video lectures, reading assignments, and quizzes.
  • A broad overview of 17 horticulture topics to build a diverse base of knowledge.
  • Links to additional resources for deeper exploration.
  • Pre- and post-tests to track your progress.

Iowa Home Gardener participants will be able to purchase their spots directly through the ISU Extension Store starting August 25.
