Red, White, and Blue AAS Winners to Celebrate the Upcoming Holiday

All-America Selections (AAS), with over 90 years of trials and award winners, is the only national, non-profit plant trialing program in North America. Reiman Gardens is proud to be both a trial site for ornamentals, edibles, and perennials showcased as both in-ground and containerized trials and a display garden highlighting recent winners. Check out the AAS website for trial and display sites, winners, blogs, and so much more!

The Fourth of July is the perfect time to think about AAS Winners! Flowers are hitting their stride and the long weekend will be the stage for many cook-outs. With a nod to the red, white, and blue, here are some Winners to celebrate.

Dahlia pinnata 'Black Forest Ruby': Available soon, this seed-raised Dahlia has dramatic black foliage and deep red flowers. The contrast is striking and you'll be impressed with the range of semi-double to double blooms that can grow up to 3.5 inches across. European judges also gave this plant high marks, presenting it a Fleuroselect award.

Beta vulgaris 'Avalanche': 'Avalanche' is a white beet that won't stain your fingers while you make sides for your BBQ. 'Avalanche' has a very mild flavor that will win over just about anyone who doesn't think they like beets. This crop has a quick turnaround of 50 days from sow to harvest; once everyone tries these beets, you might need to plan for several successions!

Salvia hybrida 'Blue by You': 'Blue by You' is a meadow sage that flowers earlier than comparisons like 'May Night'. Like most perennial sages, home gardeners will see a second flush of blooms heading into fall after deadheading the summer flush. Another great addition to your pollinator garden! We have this growing in the center of our trial beds and it was GORGEOUS; we just trimmed it back for a second flush!
